Are you making a difference? You Can!
You can make a big difference in protecting the environment by reducing the amount of trash you create. One way to do this is by recycling. Recycling is important because it helps protect our natural resources and helps save landfill space. What can you do to help create a healthier environment? Start by separating recyclable items from the trash at your home. Sort out the newspaper, aluminum and metal cans, cardboard, #1 and #2 plastic bottles, glass jars and mixed paper. (Mixed paper includes things like junk mail, catalogs, magazines, envelopes, cards and dry food or tissue boxes.) Be sure to rinse out cans and bottles and throw away any caps or lids. You can flatten items like boxes, cans and plastic bottles to makes them easier to store. If you live in the city you can put these things in your blue recycling bin. Otherwise you can take them to a drop-off recycling center. Some recycling centers pay cash for aluminum cans so you can even make a little extra spending money by recycling. Give it a try! It's easy!

Principles of Good Outdoor Design
Local artists have an opportunity to see their artwork displayed around the city in the Solid Waste District's annual billboard contest. Each year the District, along with Keep Evansville Beautiful, Lamar Outdoor Advertising and Veolia Environmental Services, sponsors this competition to promote recycling and waste reduction. Entrants create posters based on a theme which stresses the importance of making recycling a household habit to ensure a better environment in the future. Winners are selected from 3 categories and their artwork is reproduced on large outdoor signs posted throughout the community. The contest begins on October 21 and entries are due by December 8. To obtain an entry form, click on the link above or call the District at 436-7800 or Keep Evansville Beautiful at 425-4461.
