MayorAnnounces Fitness in the Park Schedule for 2012
Posted Date: 7/12/2012

The Fitness in the Park program for July is scheduled this Saturday at Hartke Pool from 8 to 10 a.m. Fitness instructors will be teaching classes such as Aqua Kickboxing, Turbo Aqua, and Arthritis Aqua. This is a free city event that is open to all ages.

Evansville was named the nation’s “fattest city” in a May 2011 Gallup poll, and Mayor Lloyd Winnecke began combating the community’s obesity problem shortly after taking office in January by launching the Energize Evansville initiative. Through the efforts of Energize Evansville, the Mayor has enlisted the help of over fifty local fitness experts, nutritionists and other health-consciences individuals to promote healthy habits.

Fitness in the Park is one component of Energize Evansville aimed at getting people more active and encouraging local residents to exercise in city parks. The program, coordinated by the Mayor’s office, will be held at a different park on the third Saturday of every month. The remaining Fitness in the Park

2012 dates are:
• August 18 at Garvin Park
• September 15 at Howell Park
• October 20 at Kids Kingdom
• November 17 at Lloyd Pool
• December 15 at Swonder Ice Rink

More details will be announced closer to each event date.

Another step toward a healthier Evansville came in the form of a fitness video featuring the Mayor and local celebrities exercising to the song “Go, You Chicken Fat, Go!” The Mayor has issued a challenge to the City of Evansville inviting everyone to create their own exercise videos. Nearly a dozen businesses have accepted the challenge. The videos can be seen on the official Mayor Lloyd Winnecke YouTube channel.
