Lead and Water Safety

Your Drinking Water is Safe

Keeping EWSU’s water safe for cooking, bathing and other household uses is our top priority. And while lead in drinking water has been a focus of the media and online community recently, it is important to note that EWSU:

  • Does not have any lead water main pipes
  • Tests drinking water for lead and copper in accordance with Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) guidelines
  • Takes steps in its treatment process to ensure corrosive elements do not result in elevated levels of lead and copper in customer tap water

Water is lead-free when it leaves the treatment plant, but lead can be released when the water comes in contact with pipes and plumbing fixtures that contain lead.

Doing Your Part

Minimizing lead exposure is the shared responsibility of EWSU and its customers, and EWSU strongly encourages residents to identify and remove any lead pipes or plumbing materials serving their home.

American Water Works Association (AWWA) has provided written permission to use information in the AWWA publication “Service Lines: A Guide for Water Systems Addressing Service Line Repair and Replacement.”

EWSU also thanks the District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (DC Water) for giving written permission to use content from their web page Understanding Lead and Water to assist us in the preparation of this website and FAQs.
