License Process

Step 1  Complete an application form in ink or type

    • Make sure you clearly state the license for which you wish to test.
    • Obtain three (3) letters of recommendation from reputable business or professional men, not related by blood or marriage, vouching for the applicant’s reputation as to honesty, integrity, and good character.
    • Fill out the middle of the Criminal Record History form and have it notoarized.
    • Electrical and HVAC recommendation letters must be on letterhead and notarized that prove at least four (4) years of experience in the field for which you are applying.
    • The application and letters must be submitted at one time to the Building Commission.

    STEP 2   The applications will be submitted to the proper boards for approval to take the test.  Once this is done, you will be contacted (via e-mail or phone) with approval to contact Ivy Tech (812)429-9852 to schedule and pay required fee for test you are taking.

    • Study for the exam. (study guide link is found at end of each license description).
    • You are allow to underline, highlight, and/or tab references prior to the exam.
    • You are not allowed to write information in the books or to add anything to the books with the exception of permanent tabs.
    • Exam fee is non-refundable if you do not call within 24 hours of exam date to cancel or reschedule.
    • You will receive immediate notification of your score at the end of the exam.
    • Electrical Masters, Master Mechanical, Sheet Metal, Ventilation and Refrigeration exams must receive a score of 75% or higher on each part to pass the exam. Passing scores for all other exams are 70% or higher.

    STEP 3   Exam scores are reviewed by the Licensing and Disciplinary Board on the fourth Thursday of the month for acceptance or denial of license.

    STEP 4   The applicant will be contacted by the Building Commission for the completion of the licensing process, which is the proper fee and providing proof of the required insurance and surety bond.

    • Applicant must have the license fee in check or cash form. At present, we cannot accept debit or credit cards for payment.  Make checks payable to the Building Commission.
