Update: INDOT U.S. 41 Railroad Track Removal Closure Date Set
(October 9, 2019) — The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) provided an update on the complete road closure on U.S. 41 to remove the railroad crossing between Virginia Street and the Lloyd Expressway interchange.
Beginning at 7 a.m. local time Wednesday Oct. 16, INDOT maintenance crews will close all lanes of U.S. from S.R. 62 to Walnut Street as Norfolk Southern Railroad crews work to remove the crossing. The project will require the removal of the rails crossing U.S. 41 and repair of the pavement.
This operation is scheduled for two days depending upon weather conditions. School traffic will be accounted for as a part of this closure, with work scheduled to best accommodate buses and other traffic during the morning peak times. Once the closure is in place, all lanes will be completely closed to through-traffic around the clock. The official detour for this closure uses S.R. 62, I-69 and SR 66.
The operation was originally scheduled for Sept. 30. However, officials learned of a federally mandated 15-day waiting period which had to be observed before removing the railroad tracks. This waiting period was to allow for informal or formal public comment on the operation. Now that the waiting period has concluded, the tracks will be declared “out of service” and Norfolk Southern will be clear to remove the tracks.
INDOT urges drivers to slow down and stay alert near crews.

(September 20, 2019) — The Indiana Department of Transportation announces a delay for an upcoming railroad crossing removal project near Virginia Street in Evansville.
On Sept. 10, INDOT announced Norfolk Southern Railroad would be removing the crossing between Virgina Street and the Lloyd Expressway (State Road 66/62) interchange on U.S. 41. The operation was scheduled for Sept. 30. However, officials learned that there is a federally mandated 15-day waiting period in this case that must be observed before removing the railroad tracks. This waiting period is to allow for informal or formal public comment on the operation. Once the waiting period has concluded, the tracks will be declared “out of service” and then Norfolk Southern will be clear to remove the tracks.
The delay is expected to push the crossing removal into mid to late October. Once the tracks have been declared out of service, Norfolk Southern and INDOT intend to move forward with the original plan to close all lanes of U.S. 41 for a period of two days during the operation with the official detour using the Lloyd Expressway (S.R. 66), Morgan Avenue (S.R. 62) and I-69.
Anyone who wishes to make a comment about the project should call our Transportation Services Call Center at 1-855-463-6848 and reference the “U.S. 41 and Virginia Street crossing removal” during their call. Those responses will be gathered used in a public comment document. Comments should be strictly in favor or not in favor of the removal. The closure of U.S. 41 for the operation is a topic separate from the planned removal of the railroad tracks.
