CPAT Testing for the 2021 application process is complete. Interview dates and times will be posted here soon. After being posted here, an email will be sent to all who are still eligible. (Passed the written exam in the top 100 scores and passed the CPAT)

To assist those who successfully pass the CPAT currently in the 2021 process. Our interviews will be scheduled for 2 weekends in November. The 6th & 7th and 13th & 14th. As soon as our CPAT is completed, an interview schedule will be posted.

Evansville Fire Department Applicant Requirements

Applications to test for our eligibility list are accepted every two years on the odd year (i.e. 2021, 2023). At the completion of the testing process, applicants are ranked from highest to lowest and this list is in effect for two years. (2022 - 2023) As vacancies occur we offer jobs from the list.

NOTE: Recent changes to Indiana Code (IC 36-8-4-2 Residence requirements (06-2021) now allows employed firefighters to live outside of the city limits. This includes Kentucky & Illinois.


  • U.S. Citizen
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 21 to 36 years of age (Must be 21 when the eligibility goes into effect on January 1, 2022 or employed by EFD before 36th birthday)
  • Valid driver license
  • Have never been convicted of a felony
  • Good moral character
  • No visible tattoos while in uniform during public activities.
  • Discharge from military not categorized as “Other Than Honorable”, “Bad Conduct” or “Dishonorable”. (if applicable)
  • Comply with all statutory requirements
  • Meet any requirements established by the Merit Commission for appointment to the Department

The examination process shall consist of the following components:

  1. A written test or tests.
  2. CPAT - Candidate Physical Ability Test
  3. Oral interview
  4.  75' Ladder Climb after eligibility list is certified and after an offer for employment is accepted by the applicant. (Testing for the fear of heights - acrophobia) 

Such relevant assessment methods as may be adopted by the Fire Merit Commission that are consistent with professional standards and legal guidelines.
