Contractor Licensing

Our contractor and tradesman license program assures work contracted out is done by qualified licensed professionals. Contact the Building Commission to complete the Licensing Process by visiting our office, calling 812-436-7880, or emailing the License Clerk

License Process
Step 1  Complete an application form in ink or type

  • Make sure you clearly state the license for which you wish to test.
  • Obtain three (3) letters of recommendation from reputable business or professional men, not related by blood or marriage, vouching for the applicant’s reputation as to honesty, integrity, and good character. The the letters must be notarized.
  • Fill out the middle of the Criminal Record History form and have it notarized.
  • Electrical and HVAC recommendation letters must be on letterhead and notarized that prove at least four (4) years of experience in the field for which you are applying.
  • The application and letters must be submitted at one time to the Building Commission.

Step 2  The application will be submitted to the proper boards for approval to take the test. Once this is done, you will be contacted (via e-mail or phone) with approval to contact Ivy Tech at (812) 429-1418 to schedule and pay required fee for each test you are taking.

  • Study for the exam.
    • Study guide link is found at end of each license description.
  • You are allow to underline, highlight, and/or tab references prior to the exam.
  • You are not allowed to write information in the books or to add anything to the books with the exception of permanent tabs.
  • Exam fee is non-refundable if you do not call within 24 hours of exam date to cancel or reschedule.
  • Books may be purchased at the Ivy Tech Bookstore (812) 429-1418.
  • You will receive immediate notification of your score at the end of the exam.
  • Electrical Masters, Master Mechanical, Sheet Metal, Ventilation and Refrigeration exams must receive a score of 75% or higher on each part to pass the exam. Passing scores for all other exams are 70% or higher.

STEP 3   Once the test is passed, the Building Commission will issue a provisional license, with the proper fee and providing proof of required insurance and surety bond.  Please bring in copy of passing test score for your provisional license.

STEP 4   Exam scores are reviewed by the Licensing and Disciplinary Board on the fourth Thursday of the month for final approval of license.                            

Applicant must have the license fee in check or cash form. At present, we cannot accept debit or credit cards for payment.  Make checks payable to the Building Commission.
